A lifetime friendship

Thomas Jefferson and James Madison met in 1776. Could it he been any other year? They worked together starting then to further American Revolution and later to shape the new scheme of government. From the work sprang a friendship perhaps inparable in intimacy and the trustfulness of collaboration and induration. It lasted 50 years. It included pleasure and utility but over and above them, there were shared purpose, a mon end and an enduring goodness on both sides. Four and a half months before he died, when he was ailing, debt-ridden, and worried about his impoverished family, Jefferson wrote to his longtime friend. His words and Madison's reply remind us that friends are friends until death. They also remind us that sometimes a friendship has a bearing on things larger than the friendship itself, for has there ever been a friendship of greater public consequence than this one?

"The friendship which has subsisted between us now half a century, the harmony of our po1itical principles and pursuits he been sources of constant happiness to me through that long period. It's also been a great solace to me to believe that you're engaged in vindicating to posterity the course that we've pursued for preserving to them, in all their purity, their blessings of self-government, which we had assisted in acquiring for them. If ever the earth has beheld a system of administration conducted with a single and steadfast eye to the general interest and happiness of those mitted to it, one which, protected by truth, can never known reproach, it is that to which our lives he been devoted. To myself you he been a pillar of support throughout life. Take care of me when dead and be assured that I should lee with you my last affections."

A week later Madison replied-

"You cannot look back to the long period of our private friendship and political harmony with more affecting recollections than I do. If they are a source of pleasure to you, what aren’t they not to be to me? We cannot be deprived of the happy consciousness of the pure devotion to the public good with Which we discharge the trust mitted to us and I indulge a confidence that sufficient evidence will find in its way to another generation to ensure, after we are gone, whatever of justice may be withheld whilst we are here. "

Bee a Better Listener

I strongly believe that it is rather important to be a good listener. And although I he bee a better listener than I was ten years ago, I he to admit I'm still only an adequate listener.

Effective listening is more than simply oiding the bad habit of interrupting others while they are speaking or finishing their sentences. It's being content to listen to the entire thought of someone rather than waiting impatiently for your chance to respond. In some ways, the way we fail to listen is symbolic of the way we live. We often treat munication as if it were a race. It's almost like our goal is to he no time gaps between the conclusion of the sentence of the person we are speaking with and the beginning of our own. My wife and I were recently at a cafe hing lunch, eesdropping on the conversations around us. It seemed that no one was really listening to one another, instead they were taking turns not listening to one another.I asked my wife if I still did the same thing. With a ile on her face she said, "Only sometimes." Slowing down your responses and being a better listener aids you in being a more peaceful person. It takes pressure from you. If you think about it, you'll notice that it takes an enormous amount of energy and is very stressful to be sitting at the edge of your seat trying to guess what the person in front of you or on the telephone is going to say so that you can fire back your response. But as you wait for the person you are municating with to finish, as you simply listen more intently to what is being said, you'll notice that the pressure you feel is off. You'll immediately feel more relaxed, and so will the people you are talking to. They will feel safe in slowing down their own responses because they won't feel in petition with you for "air time"! Not only will being a better listener make you a more patient person, it will also enhance the quality of your relationships. Everyone loves to talk to someone who truly listens to what they are saying.

Teachers are People

Today, more than ever before, education is playing an important role in the teaching of children. The school has bee a vital part of every munity, drawing children from every walk of life.

The children are eager to take advantage of its opportunities, emerging from their sheltered confines, dipping easily into the habits of the student. They are ing from far and near, struggling towards an education, whetting their appetites for knowledge, forming friendships for the future. Childish energy lets nothing stand in its way. In their tiny hands, they hold the future.

The person upon whose capable shoulders rests the responsibility for their education is that unsung hero, the teacher. He must be fair, honest, understanding, and intelligent. He must handle every situation with the utmost dignity. With a plete understanding of his pupils, the experienced teacher equips himself for the classroom. The students eagerly return to the classroom. Youthful minds are encouraged to develop their latent talents. Ah, yes, the creative outlets of the arts and the crafts. Tests and examinations fill out the day, as bright little minds gather knowledge form their teacher. But the little hands make the time pass quickly.

Contrary to popular belief, the teacher's work is not through at the end of the school day. Oh, no. There’re many unfinished chores -- blackboards to be cleaned, erasers dusted, and of course the ever-present parent-teacher relationship. So it's to this great profession and its halls of learning that we dedicate this. When the occasion arises, there’re times when disciplinary actions must be taken.

1 The Origin of Refrigerators

By the mid-nineth century, the term"icebox"had entered the American language, but icewas still only beginning to affect the diet of ordinary citizens in the United States. The ice tradegrew with the growth of cities.Ice was used in hotels, terns, and hospitals, and by someforward-looking city dealers in fresh meat, fresh fish, and butter. After the Civil War (1861-1865),as ice was used to refrigerate freight cars, it also came into household use. Even before 1880,half the ice sold in New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, and one-third of that sold in Bostonand Chicago, went to families for their own use.

This had become possible because a new household convenience, the icebox,a precursor ofthe modern refrigerator, had been invented. Making an efficient icebox was not as easy as wemight now suppose. In the early nineth century, the knowledge of the physics of heat, which was essential to a science of refrigeration, was rudimentary. The commonsense notionthat the best icebox was one that prevented the ice from melting was of course mistaken, for itwas the melting of the ice that performed the cooling.

Nevertheless, early efforts to economize ice included wrapping the ice in blankets, which keptthe ice from doing its job. Not until near the end of the nineth century did inventorsachieve the delicate balance of insulation and circulation needed for an efficient icebox.Butas early as 1803, an ingenious Maryland farmer, Thomas Moore, had been on the right track. He owned a farm about twenty miles outside the city of Washington, for which the village ofGeorgetown was the market center.

When he used an icebox of his own design to transport his butter to market, he found thatcustomers would pass up the rapidly melting stuff in the tubs of his compes to pay apremium price for his butter, still fresh and hard in neat, one-pound bricks. One advantage ofhis icebox, more explained, was that farmers would no longer he to trel to market at nightin order to keep their produce cool.

2 The Organic Foods

Are organically grown foods the best food choices? The advantages claimed for such foods overconventionally grown and marketed food products are now being debated. Advocates oforganic foods -- a term whose meaning varies greatly -- frequently proclaim that suchproducts are safer and more nutritious than others.

The growing interest of consumers in the safety and nutritional quality of the typical NorthAmerican diet is a welcome development. However, much of this interest has been sparked bysweeping claims that the food supply is unsafe or inadequate in meeting nutritional needs.

Although most of these claims are not supported by scientific evidence, the preponderanceof written material advancing such claims makes it difficult for the general public to separatefact from fiction. As a result, claims that eating a diet consisting entirely of organically grownfoods prevents or cures disease or provides other benefits to health he become widelypublicized and form the basis for folklore.

Almost daily the public is besieged by claims for "no-aging" diets, new vitamins and otherwonder foods. There are numerous unsubstantiated reports that natural vitamins aresuperior to synthetic ones, that fertilized eggs are nutritionally superior to unfertilized eggs, that untreated grains are better than fumigated grains and the like.

One thing that most organically grown food products seem to he in common is that they costmore than conventionally grown foods. But in many cases consumers are misled if theybelieve organic foods can maintain health and provide better nutritional quality thanconventionally grown foods. So there is real cause for concern if consumers particularly thosewith limited incomes, distrust the regular food supply and buy only expensive organic foodsinstead.

3 The Nobel Academy

For the last 82 years, Sweden's Nobel Academy has decided who will receive the Nobel Prize inLiterature, thereby determining who will be elevated from the great and the near great to theimmortal. But today the Academy is coming under hey critici both from the without andfrom within. Critics contend that the selection of the winners often has less to do with truewriting ability than with the peculiar internal politics of the Academy and of Sweden itself.According to Ingmar Bjorksten, the cultural editor for one of the country's two majornewspapers, the prize continues to represent "what people call a very Swedish exercise:reflecting Swedish tastes." The Academy has defended itself against such charges ofprovinciali in its selection by asserting that its physical distance from the great literarycapitals of the world actually serves to protect the Academy from outside influences. This maywell be true, but critics respond that this very distance may also be responsible for theAcademy's inability to perceive accurately authentic trends in the literary world. Regardlessof concerns over the selection process, however, it seems that the prize willcontinue to surviveboth as an indicator of the literature that we most highly praise, and as an elusive goal thatwriters seek. If for no other reason, the prize will continue to be desirable for the financialrewards that accompany it; not only is the cash prize itself considerable, but it alsodramatically increases sales of an author's books.

Women in Colonial North America

The status of women in colonial North America has been well studied and described and can bebriefly summarized. Throughout the colonial period there was a marked shortage of women, which varied with the regions and was always greatest in the frontier areas. This forableratio enhanced women's status and position and allowed them to pursue different careers.

The Puritans, the religious sect that dominated the early british colonies in North America, regarded idleness as a sin, and believed that life in an underdeveloped country made itabsolutely necessary that each member of the community perform an economic function.

Thus work for women, married or single, was not only approved, it was regarded as a civic duty.Puritan town councils expected idows and unattached women to be self supporting and for along time provided needy spinsters with parcels of land. There was no social sanction againstmarried women working; on the contrary, wives were expected to help their huands in theirtrade and won social approval for doing extra work in or out of the home. Needy children, girlsas well as boys, were indentured or apprenticed and were expected to work for their keep.

The vast majority of women worked within their homes, where their labor produced mostarticles needed for the family. The entire colonial production of cloth and clothing and partiallythat of shoes was in the hands of women. In addition to these occupations, women werefound in many different kinds of employment. They were butchers, silveriths, guniths andupholsterers. They ran mills, plantations, tanyards, shipyards, and every kind of shop, tern, and boardinghouse. They were gatekeepers, jail keepers, sextons, journalists, printers, apothecaries, midwives, nurses, and teachers.

The Definition of "Price"

Prices determine how resources are to be used. They are also the means by which productsand services that are in limited supply are rationed among buyers. The price system of theUnited States is a complex network composed of the prices of all the products bought andsold in the economy as well as those of a myriad of services, including labor, professional, transportation, and public-utility services. The interrelationships of all these prices make upthe "system" of prices. The price of any particular product or service is linked to a broad, complicated system of prices in which everything seems to depend more or less uponeverything else. If one were to ask a group of randomly selected individuals to define "price",many would reply that price is an amount of money paid by the buyer to the seller of a productor service or, in other words, that price is the money value of a product or service as agreedupon in a market transaction. This definition is, of course, valid as far as it goes. For acomplete understanding of a price in any particular transaction, much more than the amountof money involved must be known. Both the buyer and the seller should be familiar with notonly the money amount, but with the amount and quality of the product or service to beexchanged, the time and place at which the exchange will take place and payment will bemade, the form of money to be used, the credit terms and discounts that apply to thetransaction, guarantees on the product or service, delivery terms, return privileges, and otherfactors. In other words, both buyer and seller should be fully aware of all the factors thatcomprise the total "package" being exchanged for the asked-for amount of money in order thatthey may evaluate a given price.

The Beginning of Drama

There are many theories about the beginning of drama in ancient Greece. The one most widelyaccepted today is based on the assumption that drama evolved from ritual. The argument forthis view goes as follows. In the beginning, human beings viewed the natural forces of the world- even the seasonal changes - as unpredictable, and they sought through various means tocontrol these unknown and feared powers. Those measures which appeared to bring thedesired results were then retained and repeated until they hardened into fixed rituals. Eventuallystories arose which explained or veiled the mysteries of the rites. As time passed some ritualswere abandoned, but the stories, later called myths, persisted and provided material for art anddrama.

Those who believe that drama evolved out of ritual also argue that those rites contained theseed of theater because music, dance, masks, and costumes were almost always used.Furthermore, a suitable site had to be provided for performances and when the entirecommunity did not participate, a clear division was usually made between the "acting area"and the "auditorium." In addition, there were performers, and, since considerable importancewas attached to oiding mistakes in the enactment of rites, religious leaders usually assumedthat task. Wearing masks and costumes, they often impersonated other people, animals, orsupernatural beings, and mimed the desired effect -- success in hunt or battle, the comingrain, the revival of the Sun -- as an actor might. Eventually such dramatic representations wereseparated from religious activities.

Another theory traces the theater's origin from the human interest in storytelling. According tothis view tales (about the hunt, war, or other feats) are gradually elaborated, at first throughthe use of impersonation, action, and dialogue by a narrator and then through theassumption of each of the roles by a different person. A closely related theory traces theaterto those dances that are primarily rhythmical and gymnastic or that are imitations of animalmovements and sounds.

The absences of it is not an assured ground of condemnation, but the presence of it is aninvariable sign of goodness of heart.

In proportion to the degree in which it is felt will probably be the degree in which noblenessand beauty of character will be attained.

Natural beauty is an all一pervading presence.

The universe is its temple.

It unfolds into the numberless flowers of spring. It wes in the branches of trees and the greenblades of grass.

It haunts the depths of the earth and the sea.

It gleams from the hues of the shell and the precious stone.

And not only these minute objects but the oceans, the mountains, the clouds, the stars, therising and the setting sun一all overflow with beauty.

This beauty is so precious, and so congenial to our tenderest and noblest feelings,

that it is painful to think of the multitude of people living in the midst of it and yet remainingalmost blind to it.

All persons should seek to bee acquainted with the beauty in nature.

There is not a worm we tread upon, nor a leaf that dances merrily as it falls before the autumnwinds, but calls for our study and admiration.

The power to appreciate beauty not merely increases our sources of happiness一it enlargesour moral nature, too.

Beauty calms our restlessness and dispels our cares.

Go into the fields or the woods, spend a summer day by the sea or the mountains, and all yourlittle perplexities and anxieties will vanish.

Listen to sweet music, and your foolish fears and petty jealousies will pass away.

The beauty of the world helps us to seek and find the beauty of goodness.
